The Way it is With Dreams

“That’s the way it is with dreams. They scratch at your door. You see them through the peep-hole: A stray dream looking for a home. You think it might go away if you ignore it. Wrong. It’s still there when you open the door, smiling, wagging it’s tail.” – author unknown

This quote is on the cover of a journal I bought this past summer.  I love the imagery.  In my life, like many of you, this is how it has kinda been.

Some of us think that if we ignore a dream long enough it will go away.  We have been wounded by dreaming and we don’t want to feel that pain again.  But some dreams won’t go away.  They keep knocking at the door of our hearts until we open it.

What do we find when we take the chance and open the door?  Something that connects with our hearts.  Something that brings us life.  Something that was given and finds its home with us.  It is what we were created for.

It can be mighty scary to open that door, to take the dream in and embrace it as our own.  The choice is ours.  Maybe we hesitate because the dream appears frivolous and unimportant compared to the larger issues of life.  But what if those types of dreams are designed for no other reason than our delight and fellowship with the One who designed it in the first place?

Maybe we hesitate because the dream is too enormous and seems misplaced with us.  Surely there are others more talented and qualified for such a dream.  But what if those dreams are designed to get our eyes off ourselves and onto others?  To benefit, impact and extend visible love to another human being? And just maybe, those dreams are meant to connect us with the One who ignites the effort it takes to nuture and grow that dream.

What is your dream?  Have you been ignoring it, hoping it will go away?  Or, are you embracing it and giving it room to grow in your heart?

One final  thought about dreams.  When we finally decide to open the door we will always be surprised.  The dream will never look exactly like we think it should!

Unhindered…live the masterpiece!
